At the beginning of 20th century, the owneress of the castle possessed, according to historical data a library of several thousand volumes, antique furniture and valuable items of applied arts.

The castle was built on a countryside estate outside the built – up area as a free standing structure surrounded by a park.

It is a sizeable, two – storey, rectangular – shaped building. It was built in classical style, richly adorned with wrought iron and cast iron workings. Above the upper floor of the entrance porch there is a roof cornice, an attica with balustrade and arched vault niche on which there used to be the crest of the Bissingen – Nippenburg family. The pyramid – shaped porch roof is topped with a pear – shaped dome with a pinnacle rising from it. This pinnacle is adorned with a stylized lily and on top of it there is a flag with a lightning rod.

This date is considered the official date of the beginning of theatrical life in Serbia. In the course of the 19th century certain German Theatres from Timisoara as well as different travelling troupes of professional actors from Vienna, Budapest and Arad began to perform in Vršac.

An amateur troupe named ” The Dilettantish Theatrical Troupe ” was founded in Vršac in 1844, and in 1880 there was founded ” The Dilettantish Association “.

The first theatre building in Vršac was built in 1896, under the aegis of the Aleksandrovic brothers. Even today, this is the place where the Sterija National Theatre performs.

The Sterija National Theatre is the oldest still operating professional theatre in Vršac. It opened on January 2, 1945, and its first performance – ” A Niggard ” by Jovan Sterija Popović – was staged on February 10, 1945.

It was founded by Felix Milleker. The Town Library of Vršac continued the work originally initiated and carried out by the institutions of Serbian Kasina ( 1838 ) and Serbian Reading Room ( 1840 ) . For that reason this library is considered to be one of the oldest libraries in our country.

After World War I, another section was added to the Library – the Sebian Book Section. And, after World War II, the Town Museum and Library divided up into two separate institutions – the Town Museum of Vršac and the Town Library of Vršac.

Library’ s initial holdings of roughly 40, 000 volumes have grown over the years to over 200, 000 volumes.

The Town Library of Vršac is integrated into the central electronic catalogue COBISS ( Co – operative Online Bibliographic System and Services ) , thus facilitating the accessibility of its literary holdings to the widest range of users.

During the period 1898 – 1942, the Museum and Library in Vršac had operated as a single, integrated institution. Felix Milleker was the very first and long standing custodian of this respectable cultural institution. In 1947 this temple of culture branched off into two independent institutions – the Town Museum and the Town Library of Vršac.

Today, the Town Museum of Vršac is a rich repository of our archaeological, natural history and art heritage. This Museum prides itself in possessing a number of memory collection, such as ” The Memory of Paja Jovanović ” , ” The History of Health Care in Banat ” and the legacy of painter Zoran Petrović. These collections are displayed in the old ” Pharmacy on Stairs ” .

It is the oldest Catholic Church in Banat. It is the second oldest building still standing on its original site in Vršac ( the oldest one is the Vršac Tower ) .

The Church was built from 1720 to 1782. In autumn 1739, the town’ s Catholic population decided to erect a votive Chapel to the glory of St. Rocco – the protector against the plague. That was the year in which Vršac, after suffering long – lasting obliteration by the Ottomans, was struck by a severe epidemic of plague.

There is an observation deck built in 2007 which offers impressive views of the town and the surrounding countryside.
