According to the old saved documents the place Bodjani was built by a merchant called Bogdan who cured his eyes on a nearby spring. Being grateful for what happened, he built an orthodox church on the place where the miracle happened in 1478. It seems that the monastery and the settlement were named after their founder.

The monastery was later destroyed by the Turks but the monks rebuilt it. It was burn to the ground during the Rakotzy uprising. Present church was built in the 17th century by a wealthy man from Segedin.

Called Mihajlo Temisvarlija as the fourth church building on the same place. The big castle and the church in Bođani were built in the Baroque style and painted by Kristofor Zefarović, a famous frescoe painter of that lime. In the palace there is a rich professionally organized museum with many old engravigs, oil paintings, church dishes, printing press, etc. Many things brought from the monastery of Manasija are kept here. From the beginning of the 15-th century to 1991. It was a male monastery. In 1991. it was taken over by the nuns. There is a Beautiful front yard with many trees and flowers which also contribute to the beauty of the monastery. The monastery also owns a few hectares of land underforests and orchards.
Now it is a male monastery again and the monks from Kovilj monastery live there. The monasteries of Bodjani and Kovilj are the only two monasteries in Bačka. Not far from the monastery, near the village Vajska, a neolithic necropolis with built crypts from the time of the time of the great movement of the people.

Before the end of the 12th century it was mentioned first the fortress and later the Templar monastery in Bač. It got its final look, which was partially preserved up to now, in the first half of the 12th century. When the order of Templars was dismissed, the monastery was taken over by the Franciscans in the Franciscans in 1301.
A foundation for this monastery was laid by the knight – monk order of Templars in 1169. The monastery was built in late Romanesque and early Gothic style. It was later partially pulled down and turned into mosque by the Turks (after Mohach battle in 1526). At that time Bač was the heart of county of Bačka which included 70 villages. An icon painted by Greek painter Dima in 1687 is kept in the monastery.

There is also one of the oldest libraries in the country with books from the 15th century. In the 17th century, the monastery has been pulled down and burn several times, then rebuilt and restored. Therefore, monastery buildings are built in various architectural styles. There is an obvious touch of Romanesque style as well as later Gothic alterations and Baroque implementations (inventory).
The oldest and stylistically most interesting parts are soacious Romanesque apse – sanctuary and the remains of Gothic frescoes from the 15th century as well as a massive bell tower built on the foundation from the 12th century which give this building an impressive characteristics. Until Turkish occupation, Bač was an important place and royal town which they often visited. It was one of those archbishop headquarters which had a palace in a fortress. During that time there were at least two other churches in Bač and several smaller in the surrounding area with weaker fortress walls.

In that period from 1338 to 1342, he built a town (fortress) on the river Mostonga with a square tower, six storeys high, important for the town defence system.

Today it is the oldest medieval forterss in Vojvodina. The town had eight towers, rooms for the parish administrator, halls, rooms for the guards, kitchen, well, barn, etc.

Lower from the town a civil settlement was growing and people could come to this part of the town called suburbs across a drawbridge through the gate called “Siljak” where once stood a wooden drawbridge very characteristic for that time. The fortress was put out of use after the fire and destruction at the beginning of the 17th century durinq the battles between Austria and Rakotzy rebels from 1702 – 1704.

The municipality of Bač is located in the north – west part of Serbia (south -west part of Vojvodina province) on the left bank of the Danube. The total area of the municipality is 367 km2. The municipality of Bač consist of six settlements ( Bač, Bačko Novo Selo, Plavna, Bođani, Vajska i Selenča) . The population is 17. 000 people. The river Danube, the biggest navigable waterway in Europe is the western border of the municipality in the lenght of 43km.
Bač is 62km far from Novi Sad and 104km far from Belgrade.

HISTORY

The history of Bač dates back to the Bronze age. There is a sword from that period found in the surroundings of Bač which is now kept in Budapest. The excavations from the Roman period done around the modern town of Bač, show that there was once a Roman settlement which was destroyed by the Barbarians.Bač, the ancient city on the river Mostonga, which is now a dried up river bed, is after which the whole region of Bačka was named. The first written sources about Bač and the surrounding area date back to the time of the Roman Emperor Justinian, the master of Constantinopole and the Emperor of the East Roman Empire mentioned Bač in his letter from the year 535. According to some chronicles Bač was also a Barbarian fortress ( 873.). Hungarian King Stjepan I founded a parish in Bač and at the end of the first and the beginning of the second millenium, Bač has already been built and fortified town connected to the Danube through the Mostonga river. During the reignof the Arpad dynasty, Bač become not only a church centre of the archbishopic but also a royal town where noblemen and rulers came to conferences, gatherings and assemblies. In the 12th century Bač was flourishing. During that period a powerfull fortress is mentioned for the first time in written documents. It will survive several destructions and it still attracts many scientists and tourists. At the head of the parish of Bač were great bishops, appointed by the king and they were rulers in this region before the Mongolians came in 1241. They were collecting, appointing military and civil commanders. Since 12th century it was a custom to offer hospitality to the King once a year. except the parish administrator there were subadministrators, judges, military officers and others. The invasions of the Turks were more frequent in the 14th century. Many military campaings against Turks started from Bač. In the battle at Mohach, Bač gave its cavalry. However, the advancement of the Turks was not stopped and Bač was conquered in 1529. after the battle of Mohach and the fall of Belgrade. Until Turkish occupation, Bač was an important place and royal town which they often visited. It was one of those archibishop headquarters which had a palace in a fortress. During that time there were at lesat two other churches in Bač and several smaller in the surrounding area with weaker fortress walls.

TURKISH BATH

In time after the Mohach battle Turks have devastated Bač and this town become a quadi town in the sanjak of Segedin and the centre of the county of Bačka which included 70 villages. The proof for this are the remains of the Turkish bath (hammam) from 1529. Turkish bath in Bač is one of the best preserved monuments of the eastern culture in this region. There are still visible remains of the ceramic pipes for hot and cold water.
