ZvornikThe Municipality of  Mali Zvornik occupies the central part of the north – west border of the Republic of Serbia, in the middle part of Podrinje. Created and limited by the river Drina ( in 1955 year ) , the Municipality of Mali Zvornik is one of the youngest but also one of the smallest in the district of Mačva, as well as in the whole Serbia.

The Municipality of  Mali Zvornik spreads on the 184 km, and consists of 12 inhabited places, with totally 14.076 inhabitants.

Mali Zvornik is the administrative, economical and cultural center of the Municipality, and it is the only one urban settlement, and almost one third of the inhabitants of the Municipality live here, about 4.500 inhabitants.

The territory on which spreads the Municipality of Mali Zvornik today, as well as the most settled areas on the Balkans, in the fog of history and mixing the civilizations, has rich historical and cultural heritage which, unfortunately, will never be explored enough. What can be for sure determined, according to some localities, there are 19 sites from the prehistoric period, tohether with 11 necropolises with about 300 tumuls dating from the period from 3000 – 500 year BC, on the both sides of the river Drina, is the fact that the mouth of the gorge of the mighty river has always been the attractive residence.

In order to control the road, which led along both banks of the river Drina toward the northern capital of the empire, Sirmium, the Romans built the specially fortified stations, castrums, like that one above today’s town of Veliki Zvornik. The similar fortification existed on the other bank and its remains can be nowadays seen in Mali Zvornik. They are across the building of the Municipality.

The territory of the Municipality of Mali Zvomik has a prominent tourist geographic position.

The territory of the Municipality of Mali Zvomik spreads along the main communication direction of the Western Serbia, Belgrade – Bajina Bašta, which, across the mountain of Tara, is connected with the Adriatic road. Also, thanks to the bridge on the Drina in Mali Zvomik, Municipality is connected with the Republic of Srpska.

Mali Zvornik and its surroundings represent a unique complex for the development tourism and satisfy all the prerequisites for becoming a ” small tourist paradise ” .

Dynasty Karađorđević Shelter

ShelterOpposite the old rail bridge there is a hill inside which there are tunnels and rooms braided. According to the sayings of people from Mali Zvornik, in the year 1931. an underground city was built for purpose of King’s hiding. In April 1941. this labyrinth had served for that purpose because young Petar II Karađorđević spent in it his last night in Serbia, before he went to exile. It is still being researched what is there in about seventy roms but till now we know that the tunnels were dug in the shape of holy cross and mat in this labyrinth there are remains of chapel, altar space and royal fountain.

The door of the shelter has not been locked for a long time so anybody can come into and see the space used forthe Kingdom of Yugoslavia needs.

The shelter, built between the two wars, has a way out to underground passages of the Roman city Ad Drinum, which connected both river banks of the Drina.
There is a passage under the Drina riverbed which is still not examined. This is not about digging under the riverbed but about the passage which was made because the river Drina, centuries ago, by expanding its riverbed, flooded the Roman city. During the centuries and millenniums different empires, cultures, religions and architectures were interwined here makes all of this very interesting.

In the settlement of Mali Zvornik remained relatively small number of rural architecture objects ( although they are in the town area ) which should be preserved on particular way. These old objects are of great architectural value and architectural specialty. The Institute for Cultural Monuments Preservation ” Valjevo ” suggested a plan for protection and revitalization of building inheritance of Mali Zvornik.
