The ” Devil’ s Town “ , the natural monument, is situated in the south of Serbia, 27 km south – east from Kuršumlija. This natural monument embrace two rare world’s phenomena: soil figures as specific relief forms rendering an attractive sight, and two wells of strong acidic waters with high mineralization.

The terrain around the figures adds to the attraction of these phenomena rendering a rather severe, almost mystical impression, while, on the other hand, the surrounding ambiance is timid and picturesque, with remains of an ancient temple and a few mining pits jftn medieval times.

The soil figures ( 202 ) , of different shapes and sizes, from 2 m to 15 m of height, and from 0.5 m to in width, with their stone caps, have resulted from centuries long specific effects of erosion which has made them grow, change, shorten, disappear and reappear.
This geo – morphological phenomenon is a unique occurrence in our country and very rare in the world. There are similar occurrences in Europe, but the Devils’ Town towers are much larger and much more stable, which makes them one of the most renowned natural monuments of the kind in Europe. The much better known is the ” Gods’ Garden ” in the USA.

In 1977, the first International Colony of Art Photographs in our country was established here and has been going on since. Owing to this colony, the Devils’ Town has become known in Europe, and as far as America, Australia, China and Japan.

This worthy locality has been put under protection of the state as early as 1959, while in 1995, by the Decision of the Serbian Government, it was declared the natural wealth of outstanding importance, giving it the first – category level of protection over the territory of 67 hectares.

Devils’ Town, as an unusual natural phenomenon, has influenced people’s imagination, so that many legends nave been created regarding its origin. According to one, the figures represent the petrified wedding guests who, at devils’ urging, tried to marry a brother and sister, so the God petrified them to prevent this incest. The other legend says that these are the devils turned into stones by the people who had been forced to carry them on their backs, suffering misfortunes, and who, trying to get rid of them, spent a night at the Devil’ s Town site.

Within the protected area, there are two mineral water wells of extraordinary properties. The ” Devils’ Town “ well is a cold and extremely acidic spring ( pH 1. 5 ) of high mineralization ( 15 g/ lit of water ) , springing out in the Devils’ Ravine. The “ Red Well “ is the second spring located by the hiking track in the centre of the protected area, with its waters of pH 3. 5 and somewhat lower general mineralization ( 4. 372 mg/ lit of water ) .

Waters of this kind are very rare in the world. Local population believes in the healing capacity of the ” Devils’ Water ” spring, while doctors and geologists still don’ t recommend these waters as they have not been thoroughly examined so far.

The soil figures, the extremely acidic waters, as well as the remains of an ancient church and mines, and the surrounding ambiance, all represent an outstanding tourist attractions that have been attracting each year more and more tourists of all kinds, scientific experts, nature lovers and others.

Visits to the Devils’ Town are organized by Recreation Departments in Kuršumlijska, Prolom and Lukovska Spa’ s and by the Tourist Organization of Kuršumlija.

The memorial is dedicated to the troops of Workers Battalion from Užice, the Posavec and the Orasans, who scarified their lives on 29th November 1941. by protecting the retreat of the main partisan troops from Užice towards Sandžak.

As a memory on their resistance in 1952 the memorial was unveiled – the pyramid under which is the crypt where the remains of the majority of fallen soldiers who lost their lives on Kadinjača were placed.

In 1979 a new memorial was unveiled, when the Worker’ s battalion was given the medal of Order of The National Hero. The authentic situation of the battle on Kadinjača, the idea of the memorial monument and the building of the Memorial Home were given by the sculptor Miodrag ŽivkoviĆ and the architect Aleksandar Đokić from Belgrade.

Within this memorial, at about 15 acres, there is a memorial home where visitors can get information on the monument and the battle on Kadinjača. There is a permanent exhibition taking place in memorial home ” Workers’ Battalion and the Battle on Kadinjača ” at the area of about 150 m2 with more than 300 exhibited items. In one of the rooms for exhibitions there is an exhibition ” Užice Region in NATO Aggression Against Yugoslavia” .

UŽICE TROUGH HISTORY

Taking into account the material remains; the area of Užice was inhabited since pre – historical times. The findings of Neolithic period have been found in large number of localities ( cave Megara in southern part of Stapari village, Potpećka Pećina in the village of Potpeć ) .

At the end of XII century Užice and its suburbs joined Nemanja’s Medieval Feudal State, which is proved by the charter from Studenica Monastery issued in the year of 1196. The first significant mentioning of Užice was found in the document from Dubrovnik Archive, dated 9th October 1329. By the mid XIV century the wider part of Užice was under the reign of Vojislav Vojinović, and after his death, the sovereignty was taken by Nikola Altomanović. By broadening his territory and power, he endangered Dubrovnik, Governor of Bosnian Banovina, Tvrtko and the Prince Duke Lazar. By joined forces Prince Duke Lazar and Bosnian Tvrtko seized Nikola Altomanović in 1373 and made him blind. Since that day Užice Region had become part of the country of Lazar the Prince Duke. After the decline of Serbian Despotic State it was conquered by the Turks. In XVI century Užice was the headquarters of Nahi and Qadi, and during XVII century it has become significant cultural and craftsmen center.

During Austro – Turkish Wars, by the end of XVII and XVIII centuries, the city has become an important military base, and during the times of The First Serbian Uprising the very important military and strategic place. Serbian uprisings liberated the city of Užice in 1805, and soon after that in 1807 the fort was liberated. Užice has become very important uprising center. After the defeat of The First Serbian Uprising in 1813, it fell into Turkish hands again. Užice was finally liberated in 1862.

According to the first preserved statistics on population after the Turkish emigration, there were 3163 citizens in Užice. By approval of Urban Plan in 1871, its intensive development started. The town was economically empowered, the crafts and commerce flourished, the guilds were founded.

On the 3rd of May in 1899, the King Aleksandar Obrenović placed the first cornerstone for the water plant on Đetinja River. The city got electrification on 2nd of August 1900, and in May of 1901 the Wavering Workshop started with its experimental work. Developing industry and merchandise, made positive conditions for the foundation of the first banks: Citizen bank ( 1884 ), Commercial Bank ( 1908 ) and Cooperative Credit Bank of Užice ( 1911 ). Telegraph was installed in 1860, and the first telephone in 1904.

Patriotic, cultural and sport associations were founded by the end of XIX and the beginning of XX century: Home Reserve, Cavalry Association ” Knez Mihailo ” , Archery Club ” Napredak ” , Choral Group ” Zlatiborska Vila ” , Gym Club ” Dušan Silni ” and many others. After the end of Balkan wars and the First World War, the industry and production were soon restored in Užice. The Industry for Hide Processing in Vrela was founded, railcars workshop, and finally, in the year 1928 the arms factory by Jakov Pošinger from Slovenia was moved to Užice ( today it is ” Prvi Partizan ” – Ammunition Factory ) The old banks were renewed, and some of the new were founded: Bank of Commerce, Market Bank of Užice and Užice Regional Bank. The railways and roads network developed: railways Užice – Vardište, road Užice – Kraljeve Vode on Zlatibor, road Užice – Kadinjača – Bajina Bašta.

During the period of the Second World War 1941 – 1945, Užice was the center of significant historical moments ( Republic of Užice ). After the Second World War, Užice slowly developed and has become a great commercial and cultural center of Western Serbia. There are Primary Schools, High Schools and Teacher’s College, National Theatre, National Museum, Historical Archives, City Gallery and National Library.

THE OLD TOWN

The remains of the Old Town lie on the rocky cliff, which separates the river bed of the Đetinja at the place where it flows out of the gorge into the tame valley .The fortification was built on a high cliff, rather difficult of access, which is surrounded by the river Đetinja on all three sides. To the west, south and east steep cliffs, up to 50 m high, as well as strong natural ramparts, descend to the river The town was possible to approach only from the north, from the ridge towards the adjoining elevation, but even there the vertical slopes defended the entrance to the highest part of the elevation, making it impregnable. The road, linking Bosnia to Serbia, could be monitored and defended from the fortress. Over the centuries, the position of the town caused admiration among the travellers and unexpected guests passing by its ramparts.

The first reliable sources about the fortress of Užice date back to the middle of the 14th century. Then it was the property of the feudal family Vojinović, and from 1366. to 1373. it belonged to Nikola Altomanović. Ahistorian from Dubrovnik Mavro Obrini mentions Užice in his description of the events about the conflict of the prince Lazar and king Tvrtko with Nikola Altomanović, who was captured, imprisoned and made blind in the fortress on that occasion, in the summer of 1373.

The geographic position and its strategic influence affected the look of the fortress. In its upper part it had a semi – circular tower, in the middle part objects for hosting the military regiments, equipment and food supplies, and in the lower, the so called Watery tower it was linked to the river. Several times the fortress was destroyed and fortified anew. Significan enlargements and fortifications were made in 1478, then during the Austrian – Turkish wars in 1688. and in the period from 1737 – 1839. Finally, during the First Serbian Insurrection and soon after the Second Serbian insurrection, from 1813 – 1819. At last, being the military object, it was made useless and ruined in January 1863, at the time of driving the Turks out of Užice.

Owing to the archeological explorations, partial reconstruction and conservation work by the Heritage Authority from Kraljevo and the National Museum from Užice lasting from 1973 – 1984, a century long erosion and disappearance of the Old Town was stopped.

ST. MARKO’S CHURCH

The old church in Užice is situated in the town centre , in the part of the town known as Carina . The church was mentioned for the first time in the third decade of the 18th century as a small church – wattle house, built in the style of wooden churches and located in the Serbian part of the town .. feliks Kanic mentions Marko’s church in Užice which is said to have been built in 1928, in the ” bondruk ” style, with steep and high roof, covered with shingles, with a small wooden tower on the west side. A wooden bell – tower, 22 m, high, was built next to the church. By its harmonious forms and beauty it is unique in Serbia.

The church contains precious icons and numerous valuables and relics, including the parts of the old iconostasis, the work of the iconographer Simeon Lazarević. The icons were made in 1851, probably by Dimitrije Posniković. The church contains a collection of engravings made from the 17th to 19th century, as well as the works of applied art and those made by Užice coppersmiths.

By order of Despot Ðurad Branković began in 1428, at the mouth of the rivers Jezava and Danube, at the very north of the country, the building of the Smederevo fortress, which became the seat of Serbian secular and clerical authorities of the time.

Enormous quantities of stone necessary for the construction were dragged from ancient sites: Viminacium, Margum and Kulič, and Serbian medieval burial grounds were also sacrified. The Small Town The Court – was built within two years, triangular of shape, with six towers, the strongest of which is the Donjon tower.

A red brick inscription on the Despot’s tower that tells of the building of the town is preserved, inside the Court, facing the Danube, there was a reception hall - MAGNA SALA AUDIENTIAS, that is – with three Gothic bifores where medieaval court life took place. Along with it there was a room with a Romanic bifore designated for the ruling family. In the Small Town there was a famous centre for goldsmiths and transcription work, as well as a coin mint.

In the period from 1430 – 1439, THE LARGE TOWN – The Fortified Town – was erected in accordance with the triangular shape, taking up almost 11 hectares which puts the Smederevo Fortress among the largest European plain fortifications. Originally, the fortress was made for defence against cold steel weapons, but it was soon adapted for fire – arms warfare. In a longer, peaceful period from 1444 – 1453, the Large Town was raised with 19 towers, whose height was more than 20 meters. In this space there were The Court Church and The Church of the Annunciation with the holy remains of St Luke, who is also today the patron saint of the town. The Large Town became known as craft and trade centre in which also a colony from Dubrovnik did their trade. After the Turkish conquest of Smederevo in 1459, the Serbian mediaeval state ceased to exist.
In 1480 the Turks raised an outer defence wall around the fortress, and at the corners and at the entry into the Town four polygonal towers with gun openings.

The outer wall facing the town and the Turkish polygonal tower at the entry to the Town were pulled down when railway tracks were built in

In World War One, the Fortress was badly damaged. The last, largest destruction happened in an explosion of ammunition, on the 5th of June,1941.

The fortress is currently used as a city park, and occasionally hosts festivals, concerts, fairs, and other cultural events. A stage has been built in the small town. To the southeast, the previously open space along the Jezava now boasts a harbor and a marina. There are also discussions underway to determine compatible future, modernized uses, and to develop projects to restore and rehabilitate the fortress.

Kopaonik, the largest mountain in Serbia, is one of the places that during the year provides ideal conditions for active relaxation and enjoyment. Kopaonik is our largest and most famous mountain, tourist and ski resort. Due to its natural values, 1981 year, was proclaimed for the national park.

Thanks to rarefied air with reduced partial pressure, mountain climate has more medicinal effect on the human organism than climate in the seaboard.

It comes to deeply breathing, increasing the number of red blood grains, in dependence of altitude, that is the most ideal just on Kopaonik, therefore Kopaonik is known as factory of red blood grains. Stay on this mountain is recommended to asthmatic and smokers, because in fully eliminate attack of astma and smoker bronchitis. The children who often visits Kopaonik acquire the ability to better submission of physical efforts, and just because of that the professional sportsmen are the permanent guests of the most famous winter tourist centre in Serbia.

NATURAL CHARACTERISTICS

The northern border of the massif is separated from the massif of the mountain Željina by the rivers Jošanička reka and Koznička reka.
At the western side, along the whole Kopaonik mountain – ridge, the Ibar gorge is placed.
The eastern side is bounded by the rivers Rasina and Toplica valleys.
The region’ s geology dates back 70 million years ago when the older sedimentary rocks were exposed to the strong tectonic movements and to the volcano activity which caused dent and issue of the magmatic cliffs.
This is why Kopaonik distinguishes itself by its geological structure of rocks of different inception and age ( granites, serpentinites, slates, marbles, andesites, lime – stones ) .
The later processes of erosion during past millenniums created present – day outlines of the relief of Kopaonik.

Climate of Kopaonik, with almost 200 sunny days annually, deserves credit for Kopaonik’ s other name - ” mountain of the Sun “. The southern position of the massif, level and openness of the terrain prevent continual detaining of cloudiness over the mountain. Colder and heavier air moves through the nearby valleys and ravines so that winter temperatures are not too low. Kopaonik has sub – alpine climate. Average annual temperature of the Flat Kopaonik is 3, 7° C.
It starts snowing at the end of November and it snows until May, 159 days a year in average. On average, precipitation are higher than 1000 mm a year.
Kopaonik, where people used to work mines from old times, was named after its ore resources ( kopati – to dig ) .
The volcano activity and discharge of hot mineral solutions caused changes on the nearby old rocks because of high temperatures and heavy pressures. That is how ” mining region of Kopaonik ” came to be, with a large number of mines from old times.
In the Kopaonik region, besides the usual ores: metals iron, lead and zinc, there are rare metals silver and gold and rare minerals: volastonite, fluor – spar, asbestos and others.

Besides thermal waters, there are also slightly mineralized waters on Kopaonik. In the first place, these are slightly radioactive springs Krčmar vode and Marine vode at the heights of 1700 – 1950 m.

LIVING WORLD – FLORA AND FAUNA

Kopaonik is situated at the border of two significant Balkans provinces, Illyrian ( western and more humid ) and Moesian ( eastern and drier ) with considerable influence of southern, mediterranean and sub – mediterranean regions and northern Pannonian regions.
Favorable hill and mountain climate with considerable quantities of the water sediment and snow cover guarantees a long period of vegetation and a creation of a large volume of biomass.
Heterogeneous geological foundation ( granite, metamorphic, limestone and serpentinite ) enables detainment of humidity and water reserves which are sufficient enough for life of plants and other organisms.
During severe winters, thick snow cover protects permanent and delicate parts of plants, animals and other organisms from low temperatures and frosts.
Geomorphological and orographic characteristics enable formation of the most various habitats of the plant and animal world in proportion to the height above sea – level, exposure, ground slopes and other.

Plant world – Flora

Favorable natural conditions of this high mountain massif enable development of almost all the forest mountainous belts with prime and autochthonous forest vegetation wich used to spread to the very mountain tops, where at those times had two smaller areas covered with mountainous bushy and grassy vegetation of the Alpine – Nordic character.
That’ s why the plant world ( flora ) of the Kopaonik massif is so rich and various.
It contains numerous and various species of trees, bushes, herbaceous plants, seed plants, fern, moss, lichen, mushrooms etc. A lot of them have healing properties and they are known as herb teas ( Klamath weed, wild thyme, milfoil etc. ) .
Above the forests in the lower regions ( Turkey oak, hornbeam, oak – tree, common pear tree ) , there is a belt of beech tree forest ( Fagus moesiaca ) in which there are mapie ( greater maple ) and sugar maple ( Acer pseudoplatanus, Acer platanoides ) , ash – tree ( Fraxinus excelsior ) , common maple, lime – tree and at the higher regions fir trees ( Albies Alba ) .
The highest forest belt on Kopaonik placed on the altitude of 1500 m is covered with thick spruce forests ( Pieceetum excelsae ) .
At the highest altitudes ( 1750 -1900 m ) the spruce forests become less thick and they are replaced with low bushes where the most prevailing plants are juniper – bush ( juniperus nana ) and blueberry ( vaccinium myrtillus ) as well as the other species of the ground floor among which we should single out Gentiana Lutea, great mullein and edelweiss.
Endemic species, like Leontopodium alpinum, ought to be particularly pointed out. The higest regions are covered with grassy vegetation of pasture – grounds.
Distinct characteristic of the plant world of the high Kopaonik is represented by peat – bogs. Peat – bogs are not very thick with specific plant species of peat. Peat – bogs of Kopaonik are over 1000 years old. Here, they are called Bare. The most famous ones are: Jankova bara, Crvene bare, Barska reka.

Animal world – Fauna

The animal world of the present Kopaonik is various despite it being reduced in number, especially of the big game. Several decades ago, bear, lynx, deer, wildcat, marten, otter and falcon and horned owl used to live here.
Today, the only species left are wolf and other game such as doe, fox, hare, and also different kinds of birds – small number of horned owl, falcon, partridge, eagle, as well as the bird red crossbill which feeds on conifer seeds.
Among the insects, we should point out Sibirian grass – hopper which lives in the high cold regions of the mountain.
The brown trout lives in the clear waters and rapids of the Samokovska reka.

HISTORICAL HERITAGE

Early Byzantin basilic ruins /IV-V c./ isdiscovered in the year 1999, in site Crkvina – Nebeska Stolica at 1800m a. s. l. ( E – 6 ) .
Historical traces of the broader region of Kopaonik reveal Illyrian and pre-lllyrian heritage. Roman settlements and later Slav consolidation.
Medieval sources, the charters of Stefan Nemanja and his successors, note this region as a parish in the region of the Ibar, from Zvečan to the river West Morava with Kopaonik in the center of the region.

Ruins of the fortifications placed on the mountain tops surrounding the central massif prove the historical significance of the Kopaonik region, like of the center of the Serbian medieval state ( ruled by the Dynasties Nemanjić, Lazarević and Branković ) .Towns Zvečan ( XI – XIV century ) , Maglič ( XIV ) , Brvenik ( XIV ) , Vrh Lab ( XIV ) , Koznik ( XV ) guarded fertile region of the wine – growing district, ore and forest wealth of Kopaonik and rich pious foundations of the Serbian rulers:
- Petrova crkva ( VIII – IX century ) near Novi Pazar
- Studenica ( XI – XII century ) near Ušće
- Žiča ( XIII century ) near Kraljevo
- Sopoćani ( XIII century ) near Novi Pazar
- Djurdjevi stubovi (?? century) near Novi Pazar
- Gradac ( XII century ) near Raška
- Pavlica ( XIV century ) near Raška.

Kopaonik has a rich mining past. The historical sources note King of Raška Stefan Uroš I who brought from Germany hired miners, know as Saxons. The miners’ settlements and towns, together with the melting plants and mints: Stari Trg, Novo Brdo, Rogozno, Plana, were situated in the surrouding district.
Mining region of Kopaonik was the most prosperous in XIV and XV century during the Despotate when it developed trade with the Dubrovnik Republic, Byzantium and Western Europe.
Mining of this region was ruined after the raids of the Turks in XV century and it revived in the XIX and XX century.
Even today, we can find the remnants and traces of the old excavations from the Roman and Medieval times on Kopaonik.
