Starting from Rača Monastery, you can reach Lađevac spring and the remains of Rača copying school at Banja, following a two – kilometer long marked track up the right bank of the river Rača. The first third is macadam which goes past the storehouses and meadows belonging to the monastery and the river itself, to a picnic site where the real hiking track starts.

On both sides of the river there are picnic sites with tables and benches with 70 – 80 seats, the barbecue and drinking fountain in the shape of a wooden statue.

The track continues up the hill to a stream which is just above the river Rača and which is crossed by two wooden bridges, from where it leads further through the beech forest.

After a forty – minute walk you reach the wide cascades of Lađevac spring. Before the track was arranged, it had been visited only by those who knew about the healing properties of its water, good for curing skin deseases. In 17th century the monks of Rača named this place Banja ( Spa ) , because the temperature of its water is 17°C all year long.
Very close to Lađevac there used to be ” Rača copying school ” and a church dedicated to St. George, where ascets lived. Its remains are being explored by archeologists, who have found the foundations of the guest – house, together with the remains of monks’ cells.

The center of „ Rača copying school “ ( which was a kind of a workshop where the old Serbian Orthodox church liturgical books and manuscripts were copied by the monks ) was St. Georg ‘ s Chapel in Banja near the Monastery. In 1630 the Turkish dervish and writer Zulih ( Evlija Čelebija ) wrote that there were 300 self – educated copyists served by 400 shepherds, smiths, farmers and other servants, being guarded by even 200 armed guards!

The oldest work of this School was Kiprian’ s handwritten book of psalms dated from 1642, while the works of a monk called Hristifor Račanin had an outstanding value thanks to its attractive ornaments.

After the Great Migration of the Serbs in 1690, Kiprian collected and completed „ The elementary reading book of Slavic manuscripts ” in Sent Andrea, while Yerotei Račanin wrote „ A journey to Jerusalem ” , surely one of the oldest travel books ever preserved in the Serbian literature.

Kiprian’ s pupil Gavril Stefanović, the greatest Serbian orator and writer from 18th century, entered a monastic order of the Rača fraternity in the Church of St. Luke the Evangelist in Sent Andrea.

About fifteen books from the Rača school are kept and protected as parts of collections in Belgrade, Bologna, Budapest, Prague, Cavtat, Cetinje in Montenegro. . .

The memorial is dedicated to the troops of Workers Battalion from Užice, the Posavec and the Orasans, who scarified their lives on 29th November 1941. by protecting the retreat of the main partisan troops from Užice towards Sandžak.

As a memory on their resistance in 1952 the memorial was unveiled – the pyramid under which is the crypt where the remains of the majority of fallen soldiers who lost their lives on Kadinjača were placed.

In 1979 a new memorial was unveiled, when the Worker’ s battalion was given the medal of Order of The National Hero. The authentic situation of the battle on Kadinjača, the idea of the memorial monument and the building of the Memorial Home were given by the sculptor Miodrag ŽivkoviĆ and the architect Aleksandar Đokić from Belgrade.

Within this memorial, at about 15 acres, there is a memorial home where visitors can get information on the monument and the battle on Kadinjača. There is a permanent exhibition taking place in memorial home ” Workers’ Battalion and the Battle on Kadinjača ” at the area of about 150 m2 with more than 300 exhibited items. In one of the rooms for exhibitions there is an exhibition ” Užice Region in NATO Aggression Against Yugoslavia” .

By order of Despot Ðurad Branković began in 1428, at the mouth of the rivers Jezava and Danube, at the very north of the country, the building of the Smederevo fortress, which became the seat of Serbian secular and clerical authorities of the time.

Enormous quantities of stone necessary for the construction were dragged from ancient sites: Viminacium, Margum and Kulič, and Serbian medieval burial grounds were also sacrified. The Small Town The Court – was built within two years, triangular of shape, with six towers, the strongest of which is the Donjon tower.

A red brick inscription on the Despot’s tower that tells of the building of the town is preserved, inside the Court, facing the Danube, there was a reception hall - MAGNA SALA AUDIENTIAS, that is – with three Gothic bifores where medieaval court life took place. Along with it there was a room with a Romanic bifore designated for the ruling family. In the Small Town there was a famous centre for goldsmiths and transcription work, as well as a coin mint.

In the period from 1430 – 1439, THE LARGE TOWN – The Fortified Town – was erected in accordance with the triangular shape, taking up almost 11 hectares which puts the Smederevo Fortress among the largest European plain fortifications. Originally, the fortress was made for defence against cold steel weapons, but it was soon adapted for fire – arms warfare. In a longer, peaceful period from 1444 – 1453, the Large Town was raised with 19 towers, whose height was more than 20 meters. In this space there were The Court Church and The Church of the Annunciation with the holy remains of St Luke, who is also today the patron saint of the town. The Large Town became known as craft and trade centre in which also a colony from Dubrovnik did their trade. After the Turkish conquest of Smederevo in 1459, the Serbian mediaeval state ceased to exist.
In 1480 the Turks raised an outer defence wall around the fortress, and at the corners and at the entry into the Town four polygonal towers with gun openings.

The outer wall facing the town and the Turkish polygonal tower at the entry to the Town were pulled down when railway tracks were built in

In World War One, the Fortress was badly damaged. The last, largest destruction happened in an explosion of ammunition, on the 5th of June,1941.

The fortress is currently used as a city park, and occasionally hosts festivals, concerts, fairs, and other cultural events. A stage has been built in the small town. To the southeast, the previously open space along the Jezava now boasts a harbor and a marina. There are also discussions underway to determine compatible future, modernized uses, and to develop projects to restore and rehabilitate the fortress.
