Petrovaradin — the Gibraltar on the Danube — is an 18th-century masterpiece of military architecture perched on a rocky cliff above the Danube near Novi Sad. It contains 16 km of underground tunnels, a clock tower with "reversed" hands, and serves as the home of the EXIT festival.
Petrovaradin, the Gibraltar on the Danube, with its well-preserved Upper Fortress, stands as a masterpiece of 18th-century military architecture. On the right bank of the Danube, atop a rocky cliff on the slopes of Fruška Gora, military fortifications have existed for centuries — from the Roman Cusum to the Austrian bastion system built from 1692.
The fortress was constructed according to the Vauban fortification system and contains 16 km of underground military corridors. On the Upper Fortress stands the iconic clock tower with its "reversed" hands — the clock was designed so that the time could be read from the Danube and from Novi Sad.
The former warehouses and military quarters now house painters' studios, a museum, restaurants and hotels. Every July, Petrovaradin Fortress becomes the stage for the EXIT Festival — one of the largest music festivals in Europe.
