Smederevo Fortress is a 15th-century Serbian capital and the largest lowland fortress in Europe. At the confluence of the Jezava River and the Danube, construction of the fortress began in 1428 on the orders of Despot Đurađ Branković — it served as the seat of secular and ecclesiastical authority in medieval Serbia. The area of the Great Town covers 10.5 hectares.

Smederevo is located 45 km from Belgrade. The motorway passes through Smederevo for a stretch of 30 km, with exits at Vodanj, Kolari, and Ralja. The city is also connected to Belgrade by railway.
History of the City
Smederevo is among the oldest settlements in the Serbian Danube region. In the 15th century, Despot Đurađ Branković chose this very site on the Danube as the capital of the Serbian state.
