Blagovestenje Monastery

Kragujevac, Monasteries

Blagovestenje Monastery is set in the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge on the left bank of the Western Morava, 17 km from Čačak. Founded in 1601/02, it is among the finest monasteries in the gorge known as "Serbian Mount Athos".

Blagovestenje Monastery stands on the left bank of the Western Morava river, in the Ovčar-Kablar Gorge, 17 km from Čačak, below Mount Kablar near Ovčar Spa. This twenty-kilometre canyon, with its steep rocky slopes and the river's winding course, is home to nine monasteries collectively known as "Serbian Mount Athos."

The monastery was built in 1601/02 on earlier foundations, through the efforts of Abbot Nikifor and his monks — as recorded in an inscription above the church entrance. It was founded under Ottoman rule, when officially only the restoration of existing structures was permitted, making it one of the rare Christian sanctuaries of that era.

The church is built in the Raška school architectural style and is considered one of the most beautiful in the gorge. Its interior has remained largely unchanged over the centuries, giving it exceptional cultural and historical value.

The 17th-century frescoes are among the finest in Serbia. The iconographer Mitrofan painted the interior and created the main icons between 1632 and 1635. The iconostasis from the time of the monastery's founding is particularly precious — it preserves original 17th-century components including the icons of the Mother of God and the Deisis. The iconostasis was meticulously reconstructed from 1902 photographs and returned to the monastery in 1994.

Nearby stand two additional sacred sites: Ilinje, a small monastery above Blagovestenje, and Kađenica, a cave with historical and spiritual significance.
